New leadership for Kaipara u by Paul Campbell

After four years of government-appointed commissioners at the helm, governance of the Kaipara has returned to the electorate with 47 per cent of eligible voters choosing new mayor-elect, Greg Gent, in a landslide, along with eight councillors.

“It was a great election result,” said outgoing commission chair, John Robertson. “I always said we would elect a really good council for Kaipara and Greg Gent, as mayor-elect, is an outstanding leader with a high grasp of governance and I also believe the elected council will provide really good value. “The organisation is in good form to support the new council and in a financial sense it is in better shape than it has been for years.” The new Kaipara District Council will comprise Mr Gent and Libby Jones, Peter Wethey and Jonathan Larsen for Otamatea Ward; Andrew Wade and Karen Joyce-Paki, for Dargaville Ward; and Anna Curnow, Victoria De La VarisWoodcock and Julie Geange for West Coast Central Ward. Kaipara candidates also won election to the Northland District Health Board, in Debbie Evans and Libby Jones with 5,326 and 5,173 votes respectively. In addition, Dargaville’s Penny Smart was successful in her bid for the Northland Regional Council Kaipara seat. KDC mayor-elect Gent is a former chairman of Northland Dairy and Kiwi Dairy companies, and former deputy chairman of Fonterra. He was taking a measured approach to his new role after the preliminary results were released last Sunday. “We are not formally a council until we are sworn in later in the month,

but I would like to get the councillors-elect together on an informal basis this week to discuss how we intend to operate together,” he said. “The first thing we have really got to do is get an understanding in relation to the chief executive officer and the issues involved — you have to establish where you are going before you go anywhere — this relates to all facets of council’s work in the community and not just financial matters.” A target for the new council will be continuing to pay down debt while at the same time providing a wide range of essential services. Mr Robertson added that “after four years the [commissioner’s] task is largely complete with just a few legal issues p Greg Gent, Kaipara’s new mayor remaining to be resolved.” Kaipara candidate for the Northland the next term. Each of the candidates Regional Council, Mark Vincent was was worthy of respect and I salute them unsuccessful in his bid, but he contacted for the spirit in which they conducted Lifestyler to thank his supporters. their campaigns.” See page 4 for a list of the KDC, NRC “While I am deeply disappointed with the result, I congratulate Penny and NDHB Kaipara candidates list and on her success and wish her well over election results.

This event was an effort to make community services more available and inform people about what they offer. Various representatives were on site to answer any questions and to listen to feedback. “It is often difficult for people to get to government department offices and this is one way for us to make it easier for them, and for us as well to find out the issues and questions being raised and discussed within the community,” said Kaipara District Council community facilitator Darlene Lang.

p Visitors to the Kauri Museum in Matakohe got to watch old time magic lantern slides which are hand-painted from around the world. The slides belonged to Egbert Dowson from Kaiwaka who travelled to America and met Thomas Edison. “He bought the magic lantern and slides off Thomas and ran a travelling show around the North showing the slides to children in every town. Mr Dowson’s family donated the whole collection to the museum,” said collections’ technician Diane MacDonald. “Children and adults loved the holiday shows. We set up a little theatre, and there were other stories such as Red Riding Hood.”

Upon Kaipara’s return to democracy, chair of commissioners John Robertson says he is pleased with the progress made over the last four years and is ready to move on.

Finalised plans to establish an education centre at the Taharoa Domain have been announced following the adoption of the new Reserve Management Plan by the Kaipara District Council. This move will set the direction of the management of the Kai Iwi Lakes for the next decade. “The education centre is a key initiative to broaden the appeal of the lakes, widen the range of users and ensure that future generations understand just how precious they are,” said chair of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee Peter Winder. p Rob Stevenson, The plan also sets out how p Peter Winder, chair of spokesperson for Friends the Taharoa Domain boats will be managed on of Kai Iwi Lakes Governance Committee Lake Taharoa, the removal of powerboats from Lake Waikare, and Waikare for $300,000. “We feel we have completed the tasks that we were given and have changed council to one that is confident and financially strong,” he said. Mr Robertson says the two major accomplishments have been decreasing debt by $18 million and bringing roading engineers and technicians in-house to cut consultant costs. These changes were recommended by the office of the auditor general and were part of a move towards creating a strong organisation to support the newly elected representatives. Commissioner Peter Winder will stay on in his new position as Crown Manager and will be in charge of managing the ongoing Mangawhai Wastewater court proceedings. Mr Robertson says as a whole, the district is growing, especially in Mangawhai. “A big part of the new council’s work will involve Mangawhai town planning. Four years ago it was predicted that there would be 30 building consents applied for per year. Now it is up to 30–40 building consents a month. “While we have had tough challenges, the people have given us great support. The commissioners

Track progressing well

Rhythm by the river

u by Ann Morgan

u by Ayla Miller

The Mangawhai Recreational Charitable Trust is progressing with the new walkers’ and cyclists’ track starting at Molesworth Drive with the aim to end at Cove Road.

A selection of local musicians will perform on Saturday, October 29 at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club in an effort to bring music gigs back to the community after popular venue, The Funky Fish, closed last year.

p Volunteers help with planting on the new Mangawhai cycle/walkers’ track

“The track at present is at stage two of the process with a length of more than 700 metres. We have a long way to go yet but it is very positive,” said trust secretary Jeannette Reid. “It goes across Molesworth bridge and follows the river upstream with boardwalks over sensitive areas and the track will eventually exit at Cove Road over the next couple of years.” The track is very scenic with three lovely facets to it including the river, the boardwalk flanked by pohutukawas over the water, and it goes into a manuka forest running over the water and the next stage will go through native bush. Ms Reid says the project is a community effort with little funds raised from other sources. “We have had generous donations from local community members and businesses

and we recently purchased a jetty which will hopefully go in this Summer after a consent application to Northland Regional Council is processed The jetty will be off the track and will also used by canoeists and kayakers. “Trust members organise things and do a lot of the work themselves but the offers of help have been great. “We recently had a planting day with more than 30 volunteers coming to help, and we have had a lot of the machine work donated which is very much appreciated. “Everyone is welcome to utilise the track. The width is wider so wheelchair users can also utilise it. We encourage people to park at the museum as it is easy access from there and they can have a break at the cafe before their walk. The facility is great.” ¢

Dargaville bands Breaking Porcelain, The Seams, and singer/song writer Olly Knox will perform a range of original pieces. “We want to get more original music happening locally and bring back some of the touring bands that used to come to the Funky Fish. There has been a bit of a hole in the original music scene recently,” says Olly. p Dargaville based musicians Stu Wordsworth, Colin House, Olly Knox, Justine Vallance, Mark Brimblecombe and Brendan “I’m looking forward to Comber will perform at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club being able to provide great quality music in a great quality venue publicly for a while and Olly says their that is accessible to the community.” sound can be described as indie rock, Olly says the bands have all been punk with a little bit of country thrown in. involved in the local scene for a few “The stage will be set up in the main years and have played together before. room which will be all about the music “If we get a good turnout there is the and we will open the doors right up potential to hold more events like this on the deck to create a relaxed free one at the club.” flowing vibe.” Breaking Porcelain is described as Olly will be working with a professional being electronic and rock fusion. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara district. Please refer to programme below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions. Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction. Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole district during October include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and the clearing of culvert inlets and outlets. Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflectorised edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs. Area specific works planned during October include: •

Minor bridge repairs throughout the district;

Maintenance grading throughout the district when conditions are suitable;

Unsealed/Sealed pothole repair throughout the district;

Roadside vegetation spraying – in all townships and rural roads;

Water table restoration – Awakino Point North, Arapohue, Otioro and Oruawharo Roads;

Unsealed road strengthening – Kirikopuni Road;

We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of October if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue. Area specific works completed during the last month include: •

Unsealed road strengthening – Ounuwhao, Opuna and Golden Stairs Roads;

Unsealed Remedial work – Finlayson Brook Road; and

Slip remedial – Pukehuia Road.

All routine work is done in cycles across the district. In endeavouring to provide good roads at the most economic cost, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done as it is about one quarter of the price of blanket metalling and grading that has tended to be done in the past. Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Direct debit winner It is pleasing to announce that the Boakes family of Dargaville has won $250 as a credit on their rates bill as a result of a recent promotion to encourage ratepayers to pay their rates by direct debit. The promotion was run in association with the first instalment of the rates for this financial year and attracted nearly 500 entries. It was sponsored by Council’s bankers, the BNZ and resulted in a 20% increase in the number of ratepayers paying by direct debit. The winner was drawn by the Commissioners at their Council meeting on 26 September. Thank you to all those who participated and congratulations to the Boakes family.

Rap battling has been in New Zealand for several years and stems from West African and Viking culture as a way of battling without physical injury. It’s been refined through African American culture as part of the fundamentals of hip hop in the modern musical world. Battles involve witty wordplay, political observations and dirty jokes, and are judged on the content, crowd and competitors’ reaction. Mr Bryenton says there are roughly 3050 regular competitors from throughout New Zealand with battlers coming from the United States, Australia, and Canada to compete. Recently US based top MC Dizaster flew to Auckland to battle our own Skolar, at a ‘standing room only’ event in the central city. “You have to have complexity and humour. There are dirty jokes and crude references like those stand up comics use, but there’s much more as well. It is wonderfully creative. At first I was skeptical but I won my first battle and the crowd loved it,” he says. “I thought I’d never have a chance but once I stepped up it was great fun and I met some great people.” Mr Bryenton says much like rock music became in the 70s, mainstream rap has become over commercialised,

A caring caller

A bright future u by Ayla Miller

u by Ayla Miller

Sometimes all it takes is a friendly voice on the other end of the phone to brighten up a day and this is the philosophy behind St John’s Caring Caller programme.

Auckland University graduate Tyler Douglas is a walking example of the phrase ‘it doesn’t matter where you come from but where you are going’.

Caring Caller is a national programme that provides a free telephone friendship service by trained volunteer callers to anyone who needs it. Whangarei district manager caring caller for the Northern region Faye Grant has been volunteering with the organisation for 14 years and says she just enjoys being part of something that helps others.

The 24-year-old past Dargaville High School student has just completed his Masters in Health Science with first class honours and hopes to go on to study medicine next year. He says he was attracted to this field because of the constant learning required. “It is what I can see myself doing when I’m 50 years old and not hating it or being bored,” he said. “Being a doctor requires you to be constantly learning, always trying to become better and finding new innovations.” He says coming from a small town such as Dargaville has not been a hindrance to him thanks to his dedicated teachers. “I had teachers that would stay after class, specifically my p Tyler Douglas, past Dargaville High School student, has recently completed his masters in Health Science with maths teacher and my chemistry first class honours teacher. “We are gaining more clients and can continue the service when they go into homes,” she says. “The most important quality a caring caller must have is the ability to listen. Our volunteers are trained and we are here to listen. Often the clients just need to speak to someone and it also acts as a security measure. The family appreciate knowing someone is calling their loved ones and we have a procedure we follow if we can’t get hold of someone.” The volunteer callers are matched with their clients and call weekly to offer their support with the aim of helping the elderly to maintain their independence within their community and enable them to be safe in their own homes. “It is also about getting the older people to realise that they aren’t obligated to do anything — it is just a friendly phone call. New Hope For Long-Term Back Pain Sufferers After over eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. "To me surgery was never an option" he said" as long as I still could walk, there was hope" Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. "The first time I tried it the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that" he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, "as specialists had told me it was irreversible", "I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief". To Dave's surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, "I couldn't believe it" he told me "I had spent large amounts of money on every form

of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time" It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to our expo in Mangawhai this weekend, or come to one of our other shows near you for a treatment. (See below for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

TESTIMONIAL

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

"We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children. The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the heath of the brain as we all get older" he told me. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, "I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain. That is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves. Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less" he said "we let the tables do the talking".

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS. Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate. Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life. Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

WELLSFORD

Wellsford School 47 School Road Wellsford 8th & 9th Oct 10am–4pm

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of the shows, you have nothing to lose and the chances are a lot to gain.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Come along for a free treatment Here in New Zealand

Inversion helps to:

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

• • • •

Dr Kanji discovered in his research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A celebration of pop culture fun u by Andy Bryenton

From movie nostalgia to superhero trivia, it seems that pop culture pervades our lives these days like never before. With masked champions like Batman and the X Men raking it in at the box office, and computer games going mainstream for a whole generation, what was once the realm of costumed geekery is now — dare we say it — cool. We’ve all got our pop culture pleasures, of course — Star Wars or Star Trek, the Hulk or Doctor Doom — even a love for corny old horror flicks or cute Japanese cartoon cats comes under the banner. The place to be immersed in all things pop, kitsch, nerdy, creative and fun is definitely Armageddon Expo, that yearly festival which blends the costumes and colours of a comic-con with the latest in gaming tech, wrestling, TV and movie star appearances, and even card game tournaments.

Certain stereotypes abound, but all have been busted by the popularity of Armageddon. Yes, it’s for all ages — we’ve seen some convincing Gandalfs and a George R R Martin or two at these events. Yes, it’s for the girls as well as the lads! Yes, it’s likely that you’ll spot Deadpool, Darth Vader, Goku and possibly even the Joker at Armageddon, but it’s also fine to come in ‘normal’ attire. The fans are almost as much fun as the exhibits and attractions, which this year include Knight Rider’s KITT, Back to the Future’s Doc Brown (not answering Rick and Morty questions), Katana from Suicide Squad and many more. Give in to your fun side and plunge into a weekend of heroes, villains, larger-than-life TV and movie action

SEE IT, BELIEVE IT! OLED IS HERE!

and, of course, the chance to collect a swag of priceless memorabilia and art. We’ve got three double passes to this massive event and you could win them by finding the hidden gem icons scattered throughout the newspaper. Collect five secret Armageddon gem icons, email us which five pages they are on and go into the draw to win a double pass to Armageddon Expo 2016. Unpacking the toys again u by Andy Bryenton

For the past 17 years the Big Boys Toys expo has been at the forefront of ‘man technology’ — the world of all things fast, loud, chromed and perhaps even slightly dangerous. It’s a celebration of life with a Y chromosome, showcasing supercars, bikes, boats and more. This year the festival kicks off at the end of October, but there will be no halloween chills — instead expect highoctane thrills, with a full complement of cars from the likes of D1NZ, hot rods, McLarens, Mustangs and more in the Driven arena alongside high velocity superbikes. There will be plenty of action in the air as well, as Levi Sherwood and Jed Mildon touch down, fresh from the world of extreme Motocross and freestyle stunt riding. As well as a carnival of internal combustion madness, Big Boys Toys offers other manly pursuits — check out the latest in tools and power equipment, watch the battle of the fittest and pick up some training tips, or witness the nation’s top excavator operators going head-to-head in a contest of hydraulic precision and power. It’s probably also worth mentioning that no manly festival would be complete without great food and some delightfully cold beverages at the garden bar. It’s all going off during the last weekend of this month, so if you or someone you know is a bloke,

BIG BOYS TOYS A tradition of masculine style u by Andy Bryenton

These days the resurgence of the ‘old-fashioned gentleman’ is everywhere — from the rebirth of the hot shave and the welltrimmed beard to the prevalence of more formal fashions. After a decade of scruffy chic, being a sharp dressed man is firmly in style. Carrying on a tradition of fashionable outfitting for Kaipara gentlemen, Jack Fannon menswear in Dargaville is at the forefront of this renaissance. With new retail manager Debbie Menzies starting next week to coincide with new summer hours, the old established name in masculine attire is going strong as it approaches a century above the main street. That’s good news not just for those contemplating the change of seasons — according to the old-fashioned rules, Labour Day signals the time to switch between your winter and summer wardrobe — but also for those looking toward plans for summer weddings. The beautiful backdrop of our beaches and harbour make for great photography on that special day and, to help outfit the groom, best man and groomsmen, Jack Fannon’s is open by appointment

on weekends heading into summer. This season’s hot trends include the addition of practical and stylish hats to the gentleman’s wardrobe, with polonecked casual shirts in bold colours and patterns to the fore. Of course men’s formal wear is timeless, but it’s also a good idea to look at accessories to spice up a well-cut suit — new ties, cufflinks and belts add subtle hints of modernity. Christmas is on the way as well, with ideas for Dad coming in daily and practical presents such as quality wallets on display now. The Jack Fannon team, old and new, invite the public to pay them a visit soon to enjoy a little old-fashioned hospitality and style with a Dargaville icon. ¢

There are a few things which our part of the world is famous for — sunshine, great scenery and lush forests are just a sample. The best way to drink in all three? Head out on the trail on your trusty off-road bike, getting close to the land in a way no conventional motorist ever could. The Ranger continues its reign atop the light commercial hill, with plenty of potential left in the tank. one way in which the Ranger’s Toyota Hilux nemesis could get the upper hand on the spec sheet. Also the very successful SYNC II information and entertainment system which sat at the core of the Ranger’s dash has now been updated to SYNC III, with a bigger, easier to read touch screen and even more options for wireless integration of peripherals. Under the hood, there are only minor tweaks and changes to meet stricter emission standards — there is simply nothing wrong with the power and torque of the Ranger’s big turbo diesel as it stands. In terms of style, the popularity and longevity of this ute now mean options like never before, with deck lids,

Not only is it difficult to scale the heights of engineering and design, but when you do, the consumer public’s craving for novelty and advancement mean that inevitably, even the most revered models must be replaced. That’s the issue facing the extremely popular Ford Ranger ute as it cruises into its sixth-model year, riding high on an upswell of critical acclaim. Having conquered all comers in the light commercial sphere — and, indeed, crushed the competition to become NZ’s overall vehicle of the year — the blue oval’s rugged sophisticate might seem to have nowhere to go. A whole new, from-the-ground-up redesign is on the horizon, with all the speculation, rumours and stylistic wrangling which such an undertaking entails. Until then, it’s a case of refining a few small features for the 2017 edition, making the Ranger an even more enticing proposition for potential drivers. The way forward for Ford has been to boost the suite of electronics on board the Ranger, from the XL all the way up to the top-of-the-range Wildtrak. A reversing camera now comes as standard on most variants, eliminating

Written from the heart Batley resident Rae Roadley has published her second book called ‘Have a Heart,’ which is written from her historic home overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. Rae has been writing for many years, her first words were published in the early 1980s. Since then she has penned a lot of creative writings, trained as a journalist and now tutors writing at Northtec Whangarei but her main focus is writing non fiction. “The book started as a short story in 2003 and then it continued to grow into a novel but I stopped writing it whilst I wrote my book ‘Love at the end of the road’ which was published by Penguin. That book was about my rural life here on the Kaipara Harbour,” said Rae. She says ‘Have a Heart’ covers a bit of graffiti, violence and issues surrounding little towns that are growing, there is a lot of things happen. It is set in a fictional location on Northland’s East Coast with a romance running through it but it’s a bigger story than that. It is a community story that centers around two families. “It is interracial — the heroine is Maori with a Pakeha mother and her love interest is from a wealthy family with a long established business in the town. At the heart of it is an attraction mixed with some pounamu treasures. It ends with a happy ending with a little question mark,” she says.
